This cottage is grounded in New England lakeside tradition. The compact, comfortable residence is suited to the owners’ immediate family and flexible enough to host large gatherings. The cottage was located to retain the site’s natural features, including impressive boulders. The open living space, with extensive views of the lake, can expand through glazed doors to include the screen porch. High ceilings on the first floor permit tall windows and doors that flood the interior with light. Three bedrooms are located under the sloping roof, with shed dormers to provide headroom and views. High levels of insulation allow the cottage to be quickly heated by the gas fireplace and reduce winter maintenance concerns. Hard-wearing, locally sourced materials and salvaged items were used along with traditional detailing to reinforce a timeless effect.
